Armstrong Tool & Supply Company

Armstrong offers an ever changing class schedule generally dealing with working with metal and wire.  This page will list those classes by subject matter, date of class, a brief description, and the cost of the class.  

Pre-registration & a non- refundable deposit of 1/2 the listed fee are required for all Armstrong classes, with the balance due on the first  day of class. Classes require a minimum of 3 students .Registration will close 2 days prior to the class. Cancellation refunds will only be available if cancelled because of not having enough students enrolled . If you have a group of 3 or more, but find that our schedule does not fit yours, please inquire about special class arrangements.

Introduction to Metals, Tools, & Techniques with Dan Neville

This is the perfect class if you are new to the jewelry & metalsmithing world, or just want to enhance your fundamental skill set. Among the basic techniques that will be covered are sawing, drilling, hole punching, filing, sanding, & dapping. Tool care & maintenance will also be addressed. Students will

gain valuable hands-on-experience & practice.  One session, 3 hours

                                            Tuesday August 3, 6-9 p.m.

                                           $45.00 plus supplies (approximately $5)

Spinner Rings with Kathy Ruffin

Everyone loves rings, & spinner rings are no exception.  Whether it is their contrasting metals, textural embellishment or the movement of one layer spinning over the other, spinners have a fun universal appeal. Join Kathy for this fun class & make one that reflects your own personality. Basic torch soldering skills required.  One session, 3 hours

                                         Wednesday August 4, 6-9 p.m.

                                       $45 plus supplies (approximately $4.00 in base metal)

Intro to Etching with Lesley Di Piazza

Introduce yourself to acid etching in this exciting class. Students will learn how to use a variety of resists including PNP blue, which allows you to transfer any  black & white image to your metal for etching. Basic forming  finishing techniques will also be covered, & students will leave with a beautiful one of a kind piece of jewelry. One session, 3 hours

Freeform Wire Wrap I with Sig Lawson

This class is a great introduction to freeform wire wrapping, & has quickly become a favorite among our students. Between Sig's fresh design ideas & her "no rules" approach, you are sure to have fun & come away with a plethora of unique jewelry pieces. One session. 2 hrs.

Basic Soldering with Lesley Di Piazza

Whether you are new to soldering or looking to increase your skills, this class is for you. Lesley will guide you through the theory & practice of butane & acetylene torch soldering. Students will get hands-on experience in class & leave with the knowledge & confidence to solder at home. This class fills quickly, so sign up early!  One session, 3 hours.

Freeform casting with Mary Kernahan  

If you want to create interesting organic shapes or just want to find an outlet for using up all of that scrap metal, then you should definitely consider this class. This direct casting method is a low tech approach using a variety of readily available materials to produce highly dimensional forms. Casting for this session will be done with pewter. One session, 3 hours

Making Bead Caps with Dan Neville

Unique embellishments can make the most ordinary beaded piece into one that is extraordinary. Join Dan & let him show you how to craft the ultimate embellishment- your own custom bead caps. This class is a great introductory class that combines basic metalsmithing techniques with more advanced techniques like disc cutting & dapping, allowing you to create your own custom caps for your beaded creations.    One session, 3 hours.

Introduction to Bezel Setting with Kathy Ruffin

If you have always wondered how to bezel set stone, this is your class. Using pre-made bezel cups, jump rings, wire and a torch, Kathy will guide you through the "sweat soldering" process, culminating in a simple sterling silver pendant, which will then be bezel set with a cabochon stone. If time permits, students will also be able to make a matching set of post earrings.  Basic soldering skills are required for this class.

Solder Inlay with Lesley DiPiazza

Learn how to use solder inlay to diversify your jewelry & metalsmithing projects. Solder inlay allows students to easily incorporate color contrast, making the simplest designs more unique. Working with brass, copper & silver solder, you will explore this technique, making multiple samples & will leave with the knowledge to enhance your future designs.

Forged Wire Earrings with Sig Lawson

Forging is one of the most basic & useful metal working techniques. Sig will share her tips for using hammers & pliers to shape, forge, & form wireworks into the next dimension! Students will leave class with multiple examples & finished projects.  One session, 2 hours

Patinas on Metal with Mary Kernahan

Surface enhancement can turn the most ordinary jewelry piece into a one of a kind masterpiece. If you are ready to turn your work into masterpieces, then this is the class for you. All patina types will be covered, from heat patinas to commercial patinas, to those made from simple household chemicals. You will never produce ordinary work again. One session, 3 hours.

Forging Tapers with Dan Neville

Forging, the controlled shaping of metal through the force of hammer blows, is one of the most ancient forms of metal work. Join Dan & let him guide you through the steps in learning to successfully forge tapers in your designs, allowing for changes in form, thickness & providing graceful transitions in planes.
